My Journey So Far…

Hi, my name is Chee Kuok Cern, born in Malaysia. You can call me KC for short. I am an aspiring music producer and engineer on a mission to bridge the gap between amateur talent and professional sound. My goal is to establish an accessible studio environment that empowers beginner musicians and engineers to create without the traditional high-cost barriers. With a solid foundation in mastering, I am now sharpening my mixing skills alongside the world-class mentors at Mastering.com to ensure every project I touch meets industry standards.
Now, enough with all these polished professional biography thingy. I wrote it with a bit of help from Gemini. I’m sure you can distinguish it once you keep on reading. But don’t sweep it under the rug. It’s all true and I really mean it.
So, here’s my journey so far on making my dream a reality.
I’ve uploaded my first song on SoundCloud in 2015. It was a remake of No Good in Goodbyes by The Script. The song was nowhere near as polished as I wanted it to be, but I remember the process of making it was fun. I don’t even know “music production” back then. I was doing it purely due to my curiosity and love for music. It served as a humble reminder that I’ve come a long way and I’ve never give up on music despite receiving little support to pursue it
I would continue to make instrumental track and cover song for the next few years. It was just me taking on these fun projects.
On 13 July 2023, I’ve decided to enroll in Andrew Huang’s music production and songwriting class from Studio.com. Andrew Huang has been an inspiration to me and my top favourite video from him was the “First of October” series. While there’s nothing wrong and bad on the class content, I find myself never really click with the class for some reason.
Fast forward to 25 March 2025, I enrolled in “The Reverse Engineering” program (short for TRE) from Mastering.com. They offer monthly free event to sort of promote their programs and courses and “Fix The Mix” challenge was what sold to me take on the TRE program. I never really know what I have passion for my whole life and seeing the event was an instant click - “Oh, I want to do this” moment.
On 30 June 2025, I officially left my second job as an environmental engineer in Singapore. Reading Simon Squibb’s “What’s Your Dream” has been eye opening for me and make me brave enough to quit my job and pursue my dream, living life with no regrets. This is a bit cheesy but it’s what fuels me to live a purposeful life without the constant pointless slavery to lifeless corporate job.
So during the next few months (July to November), just like a child discovering a new toy, I was really eager to take on this new chapter of my life. I’ve submitted my own spin for the stems provided for numerous challenges:

At that time, it was a very good start but I lacked direction. I was firing random shots without a target in mind. The fact that I only have one track on major streaming platform enhanced my previous statement. I choose “Lost But Hopeful” to be distributed as this was the most polished song I had at that time to show case to the public. Not long after, the thought of myself being an artist doesn’t really click for me.
On 30 August 2025, I started posting mastering practice video almost daily on major social media platforms. It’s a popular format where I titled my video as “Day X Mastering Practice Until I Turned Pro”. The idea came up as I was thinking if I have to practice mastering everyday, I might make a video and put it out there for people to judge my work. Most of the unmastered stereo track came from Cambridge Music Technology and a handful of them are from my program curriculum and even few of it were from pixabay.com.
On 6 October 2025, I landed my first client who agreed to credit me for the master. A stranger which I approached in Discord was kind enough to trust me with his music. I’ve never felt so fulfilled and happy in my entire life.
Soon after that, I realised my dependence on my MacBook Air was greater day by day until it no longer can stands my workflow. I need a more powerful machine so that I can continue with my work. Therefore, I invested in a MacBook Pro on 22 October 2025. Not a wallet friendly decision but still a wise decision made.
On December 2025, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a fellow student at TRE community challenge to show case our collaborative effort on Holiday music. It was rather rushed and I think we did our best to make it sound as good.
I took a small break during the holiday season as posting almost daily on social media has taken too much of my time. This is all on me as I still took too long to master a track.
